Welsh infants and their families are missing out on a free hot school meal every day because of the Welsh Labour Government, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have said today.
Liberal Democrats in Government have introduced free school meals for all pupils aged 4-7 in England, the first of which will be served this week as children go back to school. The scheme is expected to save the average family £400 a year per child. Free school lunches save parents money, improve children’s’ education, and make sure children eat a healthy and nutritious meal at least once a day. The Montgomeryshire Liberal Democrats encourage everyone to sign the online petition and help achieve the same here in Wales.
Commenting on the matter, Jane Dodds, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Montgomeryshire said:
“Many children in Montgomeryshire study over the border in England and will soon benefit from free school meals. But there are many who children who don’t travel and are missing out. We should not put families in Wales at a disadvantage when pilot schemes have already proven how successful this policy is.
“Children benefiting from these free school meals eat less junk food and far more fruit and vegetables. A good diet is absolutely necessary to cut back on childhood obesity. This scheme could help ensure that children eat healthily and have the energy they need to learn.
“These are still difficult times for many people. The Liberal Democrats are committed to easing the burden on families. Free school meals are just one way we are trying to make a difference.”
