Lembit has signed the Keep Wales Nuclear free petition.

Commenting on an article by the Secretary of State for Wales, Peter Hain, for the Socialist Environmental Resources Association (Sera) where he voices his opposition to nuclear power, Lembit Öpik, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats said: "Peter Hain is right. Nuclear energy has overwhelming disadvantages in terms of cost, security, and environmental safety. Instead of new generation of nuclear power plants we need proper investment in renewable technology and genuine political commitment from the Government to give us a greener, cleaner future.

"This is an important move from the Secretary of State for Wales at a crucial point in the Government's energy review. The case against a new generation of nuclear power has been made by the Government's own advisory body, the Sustainable Development Commission and now by a key member of the Cabinet.

"Peter Hain's views reflect the public consensus in Wales. People are angry about the slow progress being made towards developing renewable energy, and are unhappy about moves towards a new generation of nuclear power plants.

"The legacy of nuclear power is counted in thousands of years. This issue is more important than short term party opinion. That's why Mr. Hain has clearly added to this vital debate.

"Wales has fantastic potential in terms of renewable resources. With the right investment we could become a world leader in renewable technology and development, and set the finest example to rest of the UK. I look forward to meeting Mr. Hain next week to discuss nuclear power and renewable alternatives, and how we can secure Wales' long term energy needs."
