Öpik Renews Call For Government Action On Affordable Housing

3.30.33pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 11th May 2006

In a Westminster Hall debate this morning, Lembit Öpik, MP for Montgomeryshire and Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, again called on the Government to tackle Wales' rural housing crisis.

Lembit said: "A generation of people in mid-Wales is growing up unable to get on the housing ladder.

"In my constituency, Montgomeryshire, house prices have risen by more than 157% since 2000, while the average Montgomeryshire household earns just £23,000.

"The Government needs to close the gap between what house buyers need, and what they can afford."
