Switch on to Digital Switchover - Opik

10.53.24am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 9th Nov 2006

Following the research published by Digital UK, Lembit Öpik, MP for Montgomeryshire, was shocked that just 15% of viewers in Wales know when the switchover to a digital-only television signal will take place.

Commenting, Lembit said:

"Digital Switchover is approaching fast. The Long Mountain and Blaenplwyf transmitters which serve most of Powys will switch between January and March 2010.

"I urge people in Powys to make preparations well before the switchover date. Further information can be found at www.digitaluk.co.uk , or by phoning 08456 50 50 50.

"Digital Switchover can bring great benefits, but we need to make sure that all those who need help and assistance receive it. The Switchover will be confusing to many elderly and vulnerable people across Wales. People need to be able to afford the equipment and, in many cases, be told how to install and use it.

"There will be an Assistance Scheme to help older people and more vulnerable groups meet the challenges of digital switchover. The details of how the scheme will work are not finalised, but the Government have told the BBC to foot the bill from the licence fee - yet another stealth tax from Labour."

Ends / Diwedd
