"Severn Barrage must not drown out the need for action now" - Mick Bates AM12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 27th Sep 2007 As the UK Government announce that they will undertake a multi million pound study into the viability of a barrage across the Severn, Mick Bates, Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson for the Environment said today: "The Severn Estuary has immense potential to contribute to renewable energy targets set by the UK and Wales. However we need more urgent action to prove that we are really committed to tackling climate change - we need strong policies on the environment and a clear plan of action for the future. "I agree that we need further investigation into the idea of a Severn Barrage and the proposed feasibility study is a welcome move. We must look seriously at the benefits offered as well as consider the valid arguments against a barrage, such as the devastating impact it may have on one of the most important sites for wildlife in the UK. "A Severn barrage has been considered for generations. By 2020 it could be generating 5% of the UK's electricity, but even if it was agreed now, with a ten year construction time we are still a long way from realising the potential that it could offer in terms of carbon emissions. "Discussions on a Severn barrage must not deflect from the need for action now. We must develop and strengthen our existing technologies as well as considering other options for the future. Ideas such as a tidal lagoon could offer a more effective solution and must not be drowned out by a single minded Government. "Climate change is a huge challenge facing the World today. Energy production in Wales is responsible for over 30% of carbon emissions in Wales. I have no doubt that be using nature's power we can produce clean energy, but we must consider all options before we choose the best route towards a greener future." End / Diwedd
