"New stadium would draw sporting events into the heart of Wales" - Mick Bates AM9.59.49am GMT Thu 24th Jan 2008 With vital funding for cultural, sporting and community events being drained out of Wales to fund the 2012 London Olympics, Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates is calling for investment in a Sports Stadium in Montgomeryshire to bring major sporting events into the heart of Mid Wales. "We are all aware of the great benefit of bringing world championships to Wales. Hosting international events can support our tourist industry and raise the profile of our country as well as provide a huge economic boost for local communities" remarked Liberal Democrat Mick Bates. "South Wales has had the fortune to attract some exciting events, such as the Rugby World Cup, the forthcoming Ryder Cup in 2010 and an Ashes test in 2009. "I am pleased that South Wales has been successful in attracting these championships; however I believe that we must develop the huge potential of Mid Wales to offer a more central national venue for such prestigious events which may be held in Wales in the future. "A dedicated sports arena in Montgomeryshire would bring these major sporting events into the heart of our country. I am pleased that following my question in the chamber today the Education Minister has agreed to discuss the issue with Rhodri Glyn Thomas, Minister for Heritage and I hope that the Labour-Plaid Assembly Government will see the potential in this proposal and give their full support."
